Sports Injuries
If your motto is “play hard,” there are a number of injuries that can occur in your hands or wrists during sports activities. In fact, hand and wrist injuries are some of the most common injuries weekend warriors and professional or semi-professional athletes experience, accounting for about 25 percent of all sports injuries.
Sports injuries are classified as two main categories: traumatic (acute) and overuse (chronic). Traumatic injuries can occur when you experience a sudden or sustained force that overwhelms your soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments) or bones. Overuse injuries are usually the result of sports that require you to overperform a particular movement, such as in baseball, tennis, or golf.
Common Traumatic Hand and Wrist Injuries
- Fractures (especially in the fingers)
- Jammed finger
- Joint dislocation
- Ligament sprains and tears
- Muscle strains
- Scaphoid fracture (broken wrist)
- Skier’s thumb
- Tendon inflammation and tendonitis
Overuse Injuries of the Hand and Wrist
- De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis (wrist tendonitis)
- Nerve compression
- Stress fractures
- Tendon inflammation and dislocation
- Tennis elbow
Although there are precautions you can take to help prevent traumatic hand or wrist sports injuries – such as wearing protective gear like wrist guards, gloves, and sports tape – and getting proper rest and stretching to avoid overusing muscles, tendons, and ligaments, you cannot always prevent sports injuries.
If you engage in athletic activity and are experiencing acute or chronic pain, numbness, swelling, or limited motion in your hands, wrists, arms, or shoulders, prompt intervention is critical for a swift and effective recovery.
